The deGuerre Pool Complex
Acclaimed as one of the finest swimming facilities in the nation, the deGuerre (pronounced de-GAIR) Pool Complex serves as the home for all of Stanford's aquatic teams. The pool complex includes three separate pools -- one for competition, another for diving and a third for water polo, training and recreation -- as well as eight indoor squash and handball courts. The competition pool is a 25-yard, eight-lane course with depths of seven to eight feet. Overflow gutters and the water depth provide Cardinal swimmers with one of the fastest facilities in the nation. The complex, which has a seating capacity of 2,500, also includes a diving pool equipped with Durafirm and Maxiflex boards. The Olympic-sized training pool (50 meters by 25 yards) is utilized for both long course and short course training, with ten 50-meter long course lanes and twenty-one 25-yard short course lanes. The 50-meter pool also provides an all deep 30-meter course for water polo and is used for University recreational purposes. Dedicated in February, 1974, the facility is named in honor of the late Dorothy and Sydney deGuerre, the latter a 1923 Stanford graduate. The Athletic Department began an expansion and renovation of deGuerre Pools in Spring, 1999. Made possible by a lead gift from Burt and Marion Avery, along with gifts from numerous other benefactors, the new Avery Aquatics Center will be the largest aquatic facility in the nation, befitting Stanford's status as a national leader in swimming, diving, water polo and synchronized swimming. The first phase of construction includes a new 50-meter pool with a movable bulkhead, the Maas Family Diving Complex with four springboards and a 10-meter tower, additional support space including locker rooms and offices, and ADA accessibility upgrades to the old facility. The first phase is targetting Summer, 2000, as a completion date. At that time, the second phase, including renovation of the stadium pool and surrounding area, will commence. The intent is that the stadium pool will eventually be able to host high-level events in all four aquatic sports, either day or night. In addition to Stanford's varsity sports teams, the Avery Aquatic Center will serve the needs of many other groups, including lunch-time lap swimmers, students enrolled in aquatics classes, masters swimmers, intramural athletes, summer camp participants and community groups. The facility may also attract a wide range of national and international competition.
