Stanford University is the world's leading research institution and is home to the nation's premiere athletic conference, the Pac 12. Stanford's commitment to excellence in both academics and athletics is no more visible than within the Stanford University Sports Medicine program, where the two merge seemlessly. The foundation of the Sports Medicine program is rooted in layers of educational development, with students, academians, and professionals across all disciplines perpetually striving to advance their knowledge base. This could not be more evident than in the two education based internships offered by the program-the Stanford Sports Medicine Internship and the Stanford Clinical Affiliate Rotation.
The Stanford Sports Medicine Internship (SUAT) is the University's first hands-on medical training program offered solely to undergraduate students at Stanford University. It was developed to provide students who are pursuing a career in medicine with exposure to the unique relationship that exists between sports medicine and high level athletics. Select interns will receive formal training and develop skills in emergency management, injury prevention, treatment application, and assist in the provision of medical coverage for Stanford sporting events.
Interns will receive training and provide medical services under the direct supervision of the Sports Medicine program's athletic training staff. Interns will work side by side with these medical professionals while learning and applying the latest, evidence based, therapeutic intervention techniques used in the daily management of athletic injuries. They will also routinely interact with Sports Medicine Team Physicians, coaches, and student-athletes.
The Sports Medicine Internship also boasts a strong educational foundation, while fostering a critical thinking and progressive learning environment . Lectures, in-services, and other knowledge acquisition opportunities are provided throughout the academic year to expand and enhance the understanding of health care practice in a multidisciplinary setting. These objectives also promote the development of critical leadership qualities that prepare each student for the next step in their academic studies.
Placement is limited to undergraduate students majoring in Human Biology or Biology and interested in attending medical school upon graduation. Students with an interest in Sports Medicine and/or Orthopaedic Surgery are given preference. For more information regarding the Stanford Sports Medicine Internship, please contact
