Behind the stellar play of three current and former Stanford Women's Water Polo standouts, the United States' Olympic Women's Water Polo Team captured the "Blastoff To Beijing" title Thursday night, July 10, with a 7-5 victory over Australia in front of a packed and raucous crowd at Avery Stadium. Brenda Villa `03 posted a hat trick to lead all scorers, while Alison Gregorka `07 tallied a goal and Jessica Steffens `09 stood out on defense with several key field blocks in front of a crowd of 2,926 fans, the largest crowd to ever witness a women's water polo contest on American soil.

Stanford Women's Water Polo will be well-represented on the U.S. Women's Water Polo Team that will compete at the Olympic Games this summer in Beijing, as current standout Jessica Steffens and alumnae Brenda Villa `03 and Alison Gregorka `07 all earned spots on the team, USA Water Polo announced Monday. Steffens and Gregorka will make their Olympic debuts in Beijing, while Villa, the team's captain, will be making her third Olympic Games appearance.

Four Stanford Women's Water Polo Players Named To ACWPC All-America Teams

Stanford women's water polo landed four All-Americans on the teams announced Wednesday by the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC). Junior driver Lauren Silver led the Cardinal selections with her first selection to the First Team, and third straight All-America nod overall. Senior driver/two-meter Jacquelyn Gauthier landed a spot on the Second Team, her first career All-America selection, freshman goalkeeper Amber Oland was named to the Third Team, and sophomore driver Kelly Eaton earned her first All-America recognition with an honorable mention nod.

Stanford's Lauren Silver One Of Three Finalists For Peter J. Cutino Award

Stanford women's water polo junior driver Lauren Silver was one of three finalists for the prestigious Peter J. Cutino Award, which was announced Saturday by The Olympic Club of San Francisco. Silver, Stanford's leading scorer in 2008 with 71 goals, and an All-MPSF First Team selection, represents the Cardinal having at least one of the three Cutino Award finalists now in seven of the last 10 years.

Seven members of the Stanford women's water polo team were honored Tuesday as the MPSF announced its Academic All-MPSF selections. The Cardinal's seven selections were the second-most of all the MPSF schools, and the total marks the fifth consecutive year that Stanford had at least seven student-athletes earn Academic All-MPSF honors.
