2009 Speedo Top 40
STANFORD, Calif. - The 2009 Speedo Top 40 Tournament took place this past weekend in Los Alamitos, Calif., and it was a Stanford-dominated event as nine current and former Cardinal alumnae dotted the four team rosters. Six of the Cardinal players helped lead the Psychedelic Swirls team to the tournament title, as senior Jessica Steffens was named the tournament MVP and 2009 graduate Lauren Silver was the event's top goal scorer.
Along with Steffens and Silver, the Stanford contingent on the Psychedelic Swirls included: junior Amber Oland, sophomore Melissa Seidemann, and freshmen Kate Baldoni and Amber Lee.
Class of 2003 member and U.S. National Team captain Brenda Villa played for the Sonic Surf and helped it to the silver medal in the competition. The Stanford representatives were rounded out by 2007 graduate Christina Hewko and freshman Annika Dries, who played for the fourth-place team, Electric Beat.
All four teams were made up of players from the U.S. Senior, Senior B, and Junior National Teams as well as those chosen from open tryouts.
The Stanford sextet paced the Swirls to a perfect 4-0 record, as the team won the tournament title with an 8-6 victory over Villa and Sonic Surf in the final. Silver led the way with three goals in the contest.
In the 16-team club tournament that followed, Stanford was again represented on the championship squad, as 2007 graduate Kate Hansen garnered tournament MVP honors and Silver won her second title in leading the NYAC (New York Athletic Club) to victory.
