Perth, Australia - The United States of America defeated Australia 10-9 in extra time to become the fourth different champion at the IV FINA World Junior Women's Water Polo Championships at Challenge Stadium in Perth, Australia.

Stanford junior Julie Gardner converted a goal from the right-hand catch to put USA up 7-6.

The match was drawn at seven after regulation time and Australia went ahead 8-7, but the USA came back with a goal just before the buzzer of the first extra period. The United States slammed in two goals for a 10-8 lead, including a penalty shot, with Australia gaining a consolation goal six seconds from fulltime.

Gardner finished the championships with nine goals in eight games. The Atherton, Calif., native posted two scores against Australia, New Zealand and Venezuela en route to USA's gold medal run.
