DAVIS, Calif.- The Stanford Cardinal women's water polo team defeated UC Davis 7-2 Sunday afternoon in the Aggies final regular-season game at Hickey Pool.
The Cardinal improves to 23-4. The Aggies dropped to 16-12.
Stanford got off to a strong start with a first-quarter goal by Elissa Kezzler and two successful four meter penalty shots in the second quarter by Gardner. Strong Cardinal defense kept the Aggies scoreless in the first half, trailing 3-0 at halftime.
Early in the second quarter Stanford extended its run by scoring two additional goals, one by Kris
Koblick and another by Welch making the score 5-0. UC Davis finally answered when Kim Parker scored on a six-on-five advantage to give the Aggies' their first goal of the game with only 24 seconds remaining in the third quarter.
Opening the fourth quarter, Stanford's Welch scored her second goal of the game increasing the Cardinal lead to 6-1. Later in the quarter, Alice Wallace scored for the Aggies, and with 44 seconds remaining in the game, Lindey Darrow responded by scoring the final goal of the game for the Cardinal.
UC Davis will travel to Stanford next week for the West Regional on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
