STANFORD, Calif. -
Six Cardinal players scored twice to lead a balanced attack Saturday in second-ranked Stanford's 16-3 MPSF win over CSU Bakersfield.
Cory Dodson, Annika Dries, Kaitlyn Lo, Melissa Seidemann, Maggie Steffens and Anna Yelizarova all found the back of the cage twice as Stanford (13-1, 1-0 MPSF) got back into the win column after suffering its first setback last Sunday against USC.
MPSF play continues for the Cardinal next Saturday, March 9 at 1 p.m. against San Jose State.
Catherine Carpenter, Kaley Dodson, Melena Masson and Rachel Johnson each added a goal, while on the other end of the pool goalies Gabby Stone and Emily Dorst held the Roadrunners to just three goals. Stone got the start, playing the first and third periods and making five saves while Dorst made three saves over the second and fourth periods.
Stanford broke the game open with a six-goal second period Saturday, increasing its lead from 2-1 after the opening period to 8-1 at halftime. After CSU Bakersfield's Shannon McKenzie converted a 6-on-5 goal with 3:10 remaining in the first period to even things at 1-1, the Cardinal would go on an 8-0 run that stretched to nearly halfway through the third period.
The run started with Yelizarova's goal with 47 seconds remaining in the first period, giving the Cardinal a 2-1 lead it would never relinquish. Johnson, Steffens, Seidemann and Yelizarova netted second period goals over a 3:12 stretch to put the Cardinal in front 6-1, then Dries and Cory Dodson scored in the half's final 1:23 to make it a seven-goal halftime edge.
Kaley Dodson scored 56 seconds into the third frame to make it 9-1 in favor of the Cardinal before the Roadrunners broke their drought with goals from McKenzie and Sam Shead. However, the Cardinal defense would lock down on the Roadrunners, not conceding a goal for the final 12:33.
Lo scored the next two goals for the Cardinal to counter CSU Bakersfield's two, and Dries added her second with 15 seconds left in the frame. Stanford would go on to score four times in the final period, highlighted by scores from Carpenter and Masson.
