Stanford got a strong fight from No.11 Arizona State on Thursday night, but was able to hold off the Sun Devils 12-7 at Mona Plummer Aquatic Center in Tempe, Arizona. The victory pushed Stanford's record to 12-1 on the season and kept the Cardinal perfect in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation play with a 5-0 record.
Even though the game ended up as a high scoring affair, the first quarter was a defensive struggle in which only Katie Hansen found the net. This gave the Cardinal led 1-0 after the first quarter. The second quarter provided a lot more scoring as Katie Hansen picked up two more goals, and Lauren Silver was able to hit the back of the net three times in the period. Kelly Phelps put Arizona State on the board in the period with two goals, and Katie Hedley found the net as well, giving Stanford only a 6-3 lead heading into halftime.
After halftime, Jessica Steffens scored a quick goal for Stanford, but Sun Devil driver Ashley Bower quickly responded to keep the game close at 7-4. Katie Hansen continued her strong play in the period, adding a goal soon after Bower's, and then also added a goal with just one second remaining on the clock. This gave the Cardinal a 9-4 lead going into the final period.
In the final period, Sun Devil driver Amanda Stepp started the period with a goal, but Kelsey Holshouser responded with two goals of her own, giving Stanford a commanding 11-5 lead. Soon after Holshouser's goals, Katie Hansen added her sixth goal of the evening and Stanford eventually finished out the game with a 12-7 victory after two late Sun Devil goals.
In the cage, Meridith McColl
blocked eight Arizona State shots and Kate Heddleston
played the final 3:42 and blocked two shots. ASU goalkeeper Caylinn Wallace stopped 14 Cardinal shots, including seven in the first period alone.
