Women's Volleyball Player Honored
March 9, 1998 STANFORD, CA --- Senior outside hitter Kristin Folkl (St. Louis, MO/St. Joseph's Academy) has been named the winner of the 1997-98 Honda Sports Award for women's volleyball, which recognizes the top woman college athlete in 11 different sports. Folkl is now eligible for the Honda-Broderick Cup, which will honor the outstanding Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year on June 14 in Marco Island, Florida. Folkl was named a First Team All-American by the American Volleyball Coaches Association this season, and also brought home Pacific-10 Conference Player of the Year honors. The first alternate on the 1996 U.S. Olympic Team also set the school single season kill mark with 605 en route to leading Stanford to the 1997 NCAA Championship. The Cardinal won three national titles (1994, 1996, 1997) and all four Pac-10 titles during Folkl's time on The Farm. The St. Louis native was equally impressive in the classroom, earning 1997 GTE Division I Academic All-American of the Year honors after compiling a 3.46 GPA in Economics. In addition, Folkl is currently a key contributor on the fifth-ranked Stanford women's basketball team. If the Cardinal qualifies for the Final Four, it will mark the seventh time in seven tries that Folkl has helped take a Stanford volleyball or basketball team to the national semifinals.
