Women's Volleyball Signs Two Prep Standouts
February 3, 1999
STANFORD, CA - Stanford University womens volleyball coach Don Shaw announced today the signing of Ashley Ivy (Arlington, TX/Lamar HS) and Logan Tom (Salt Lake City, UT/Highland HS) to National Letters-of-Intent beginning with the 1999-2000 school year.
Were extremely pleased that Ashley and Logan have signed with Stanford, Shaw said. They are outstanding athletes that bring a very high skill level, as well as the invaluable advantage of international experience.
Tom is one of the most highly recruited womens volleyball players in NCAA history. She is the only high school member of the United States National Team - the average age of the team is 24 - and recently played in the World Championship Qualifying Tournament in San Antonio. The outside hitter was also named the 1998 Gatorade Circle of Champions National High School Volleyball Player of the Year. The 1999 Stanford roster will now feature three of the last four National High School Volleyball Players of the Year - Kerri Walsh (1995), Sara Sandrik (1997) and Tom (1998).
Ivy comes to Stanford as one of the top recruits out of Texas, and was the 1998 Dallas Area Player of the Year. She was also a teammate of both Stanford freshman Lindsey Yamasaki and Tom on the 1998 U.S. Junior National Team.
Stanford has won all four of its NCAA Championships in the last seven years (1992, 94, 96, 97), and has won five straight Pacific-10 Conference titles. Stanford has also made 11 Final Four appearances, and is the only program to qualify for regional play in all 18 years of the NCAA Tournaments existence. In the last five years alone, Stanford is 152-12 overall (.927) and 87-3 in the Pacific-10 Conference (.967). In 1998, the Cardinal went 27-4 overall and won the Pac-10 with a 17-1 record despite having just one senior on the roster (back row specialist Sarah Neal). The Cardinal also advanced to the 1998 NCAA Mountain Regional Semifinals. Shaw also owns the best winning percentage in Division I womens volleyball history, with a 409-67 (.859) record in 15 seasons.

Ashley Ivy, 6-0, Outside Hitter, Arlington, TX/Lamar HS
Member of the 1998 United States Junior National Team ... The 1998 Dallas Area Player of the Year and two-time First Team All-Area selection by the Dallas & Arlington Morning News and the Ft. Worth & Arlington Star-Telegram ... Named District 7-5A MVP as a senior ... Also a two-year captain of the Lamar varsity basketball team and member of the schools track team ... Named Second Team All-Dallas in basketball as a sophomore and junior ... District qualifier in the high jump and hurdles as a junior ... Has a 4.2 GPA, and is a member of the National Honor Society ... Sister, Laura, plays volleyball at Southwest Texas State.
Stanford head coach Don Shaw on Ivy: Ashley being left-handed is a major bonus, because we havent had many left-handers in our program over the years. She will most likely be a right-side player for next year, and will give us depth behind (senior and three-time First Team All-American) Kerri Walsh that we didnt have last year. She will learn a lot from playing behind and against Kerri, and has a bright future in our program.
Logan Tom, 6-1, Outside Hitter, Salt Lake City, UT/Highland HS
The 1998 Gatorade Circle of Champions National High School Volleyball Player of the Year ... Played for the U.S. National Womens Volleyball Team at the World Championship Qualifier in San Antonio last month, and also toured the Dominican Republic and Cuba with the national squad ... Featured as a 1997 Old Spice Athlete of the Month in Sports Illustrated ... Has also been featured on ESPNS Scholastic Sports America ... At 16 was the youngest member of the 1996 U.S. Junior National Team, but still led the team in blocks and kills ... Holds Utah state records for career kills and service aces, and helped lead Highland to two state championships ... Has also competed in basketball and track at Highland ... All-state selection in basketball ... Place third in the state in the javelin last year ... Has a 4.0 GPA and is ranked No. 1 in her class. Stanford head coach Don Shaw on Tom: Few players come to the collegiate level with the skills and experience that Logan already possesses. Its extremely rare for a high school junior to play on a U.S. National Team made up of college graduates. That alone says a lot about what she can do on the volleyball court.
