Stanford, Penn State Advance to Finals
As expected, Stanford and Penn State, ranked 1-2 respectively in the nation, advanced to the championship match of the State Farm/NACWAA Women's Volleyball Classic on the Campus of Stanford University.
Led by senior Terri Zemaitis 25 kills, Penn State held off a late rally by eigth ranked Brigham Young to take a a 3-1 victory in the tourney opener. After dropping games one and two decisively (15-8,15-5), the Cougers rallied behind the play of junior Helen Hjorth, who finished the match with a career high 25 kills, to capture game three 15-12. The Nittany Lions staved off the Cougers in game four, closing out the match with a narrow 15-13 decision in game four.
In the nightcap, defending national champion Cardinal rebounded from a game one loss (15-12) to take the next three for a 3-1 victory. With the win, Stanford extended it's home court winning streak to 50. The Cardinal were led by senior captain Kristin Folkl's team-leading 20 kills.
Stanford and Penn State will meet in the championship match tomorrow night at 7:00 p.m. in Maples Pavilion. Brigham Young and Texas A&M will meet in the consolatin match at 5:00 p.m.
