NO. 4 STANFORD TOPS NO. 20 COLORADO IN STANFORD SHOWCASE
NO. 7 UCSB SWEEPS OKLAHOMA IN OPENER
STANFORD, Calif. --- Senior Kristin Folkl (St. Louis, MO/St. Joseph's Academy) had a match-high 16 kills to lead fourth-ranked Stanford University to a convincing 15-10, 15-4, 15-4 win over No. 20 Colorado (4-4) in the Stanford Showcase on Saturday night at Maples Pavilion. The win was the Cardinal's fifth straight.
In the opening match, seventh-ranked UC Santa Barbara (11-1) beat Oklahoma (6-5) 15-9, 15-10, 15-3. Both Stanford and UC Santa Barbara went 2-0 in the Stanford Showcase, while Colorado and Oklahoma were 0-2.
The Cardinal jumped out to 7-0 leads in game one and two and 10-2 in game three to put the Buaffloes away in 1 hour and 19 minutes. Stanford also outhit the Buffaloes .308-.070, holding Colorado to a .014 hitting percentage in the final two games.
Sophomore Kerri Walsh (Saratoga, CA/Archbishop Mitty HS) added 13 digs and 10 kills and sophomore Jaimi Gregory (Westminster, CA/Wilson HS) 13 digs. Junior Tegan Lynch (Aptos, CA/Aptos HS) and junior Courtney Owens (Costa Mesa, CA/Calvary Chapel HS) had 10 kills apiece for Colorado.
In the first match, junior Katie Crawford (Fallbrook, CA/Fallbrook HS) hit .593 with 18 kills and six blocks to lead the Gauchos to the three-game win. Oklahoma jumped out to a 6-2 lead in game one, but the Gauchos railled to win 15-9 and never looked back. Santa Barbara then jumped out to 8-0 leads in both game two and three.
Sophomore Roberta Gehlke (Huntington Beach, CA/Mater Dei HS) added 14 digs and 11 kills for the winners. Freshman Danielle Cornelius (Hereford, TX/Hereford HS) led the Sooners with 13 kills.
