Stanford Sweeps Oklahoma in Stanford Showcase
STANFORD, CA --- Senior Kristin Folkl (St. Louis, MO/St. Joseph's Academy) and sophomore Kerri Walsh (Saratoga, CA/Archbishop Mitty HS) had 19 kills apiece to lead fourth-ranked Stanford University (9-2) to a 15-10, 15-12, 15-6 win over Oklahoma (6-4) on Friday night at Maples Pavilion in the first day of competition at the Stanford Showcase. In the opening match, No. 7 UC Santa Barbara (10-1) held off No. 20 Colorado (4-3) 11-15, 15-13, 15-8, 15-6.
Folkl and Walsh hit .581 and .552, respectively, as the Cardinal outhit the Sooners .476-.255. Fifth-year senior Paula McNamee (Wheaton, MD/Sidwell Friends HS) added 11 kills and five blocks, while senior Lisa Sharpley (Los Altos, CA/Los Altos HS) added 56 assists, seven blocks and seven digs.
Freshman Danielle Cornelius (Hereford, TX/Hereford HS) had 17 kills and junior Tanisha Webster (Dallas, TX/Skyline HS) 15 kills for the Sooners.
In the opener, UC Santa Barbara bounced back from a sluggish game one to pull away from the Buffaloes. The Gauchos outhit the Buffaloes .346-.097 in the final three games behind 15 kills from sophomore Heather Bown (Yorba Linda, CA/Esperanza HS). Junior Katie Crawford (Fallbrook, CA/Fallbrook HS) added 13 blocks and 12 kills for the winners.
Junior Sarah Lodge (Houston, TX/Cypress Creek HS) led Colorado with 13 kills.
The Stanford Showacse concludes on Saturday with No. 7 UC Santa Barbara taking on Oklahoma at 5 p.m. and No. 4 Stanford meeting No. 20 Oklahoma at 7 p.m.
