Stanford Wins Eleventh Straight Match In Pac-10 Season Opener
Sept. 23, 2005 Stanford, Ca - Freshman outside hitter Cynthia Barboza collected a career-high 26 kills to power the third-ranked Stanford women's volleyball team to a 31-29, 30-27, 30-21 victory over 12th-ranked USC in the Pacific-10 season opener on Friday night at Maples Pavilion. The victory was also Stanford's eleventh straight win. Barboza added eleven digs and a hitting percentage of .511 to help the Cardinal raise its record to 12-1 overall and 1-0 in the Pac-10. USC fell to 4-5 overall and 0-1 in the conference. Kristin Richards and Courtney Schultz collected 30 digs, 16 by Richards. With the game tied at 10-10 in game one, Stanford proceeded to outscore the Trojans, 14-7, to take a 24-17 lead, its biggest lead of the game. USC then mounted its own rally to tie the match at 28-28. A kill by Diane Copenhagen sent the Trojans in front by one, but Stanford tied the match at 29-29 on a kill by freshman Erin Waller. A Bryn Kehoe service ace and a kill by Barboza gave Stanford game one, 31-29. In game two, Stanford scored five straight points to take a 10-5 lead. The Trojans cut the Cardinal lead to one point, 18-17, but Stanford never gave the Trojans a chance to tie the match. A 26-25 Stanford lead grew to 29-27, and then Stanford closed out the game (30-27) on a USC service error. With the score tied at 7-7 in game three, Stanford went on a 14-8 run to take a 21-15 lead. The lead extended to seven points, 28-21, and Stanford then closed out the game (30-28) and the match on two hitting errors by the Trojans.
