Edrick Floreal

Player Profile
Position:
Associate Head Coach

Edrick Floreal begins his third season with the Cardinal track & field program and during his brief tenure on The Farm, he has coached several athletes to championships and new school records. As the Associate Head Coach for women’s track and field, Floreal will oversee the entire operation of the women’s team. In addition, Floreal will again assist with the development of Stanford’s sprinters, hurdlers and jumpers.

Head Coach Vin Lananna said, "Edrick will do a superb job guiding the Stanford women in 2001. His vast background in collegiate track and field and successful coaching experience at numerous Division I universities will allow Edrick to make a smooth and natural transition as Associate Head Coach."

Floreal’s experience and technical knowledge as a world-class athlete serve the Cardinal athletes in a way few coaches can. In Floreal’s inaugural season with Stanford, the Cardinal women finished second in the 4x100 meter relay at the Pac-10 Championships in Tempe, Arizona. That effort tied a school record that had stood for seven years. Tracye Lawyer won her third consecutive Pac-10 title in the heptathlon and her first NCAA title in that event, and freshman sensation Michael Ponikvar captured the conference crown in the high jump. Several other Stanford athletes broke school records and competed on national and international teams thanks to the guidance of Coach Floreal.

Prior to his stint at Stanford, Edrick produced 13 All-Americans and five Southeastern Conference champions in three seasons at the University of Kentucky. Coach Floreal also enjoyed successful coaching stints at Georgia Tech where Yellow Jacket sprinters, hurdlers and jumpers won six Atlantic Coast Conference championships from 1993-96. Edrick began his coaching career at the University of Nebraska.

Floreal also sports an impressive athletic record. As a world class triple jumper, Edrick has represented Canada in the IAAF World Championships and made the Olympic Team in 1988 and 1992. In 1989, Floreal was ranked 9th in the world in the triple jump.

A 1990 graduate of the University of Arkansas, Floreal helped the Razorbacks win four NCAA team titles during his career. He also made history by becoming the first athlete in NCAA history to win three consecutive NCAA triple jump titles. All totaled, Floreal won five NCAA jump titles both indoors and outdoors.

Floreal is married to LaVonna Martin-Floreal, the 1992 Olympic silver medalist in the 100 meter hurdles. The couple has two children, Edrick Jr and Mikaille. The Floreals reside in Palo Alto.
