NCAA Championships Tournament Central
STANFORD, Calif.- Hilary Barte's singles run at the NCAA Championships in College Station, Texas, came to an end on Friday afternoon, but the sophomore remains alive in the doubles draw with Lindsay Burdette after another strong performance.
After opening the singles tournament with back-to-back three-set victories, Barte was upended by Florida's Marrit Boonstra 7-5, 6-1. Boonstra, ranked No. 8 nationally, became the first player this year to defeat Barte without having to play a tiebreaker in any set to decide the match.
Ranked No. 7 in the country and the tournament's No. 7 overall seed, Barte wraps her second season on The Farm with a team-best 35-6 overall mark. The 2009 Pac-10 Player of the Year, Barte closed the year by winning 26 of her last 29 matches overall and was 23-6 against nationally-ranked opponents.
In doubles, Barte and Burdette continued their dominant play with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over SMU's Marta Lesniak and Aleksandra Malyarschikova on Friday afternoon. That win puts Barte and Burdette into Saturday's quarterfinals, where Stanford's top duo will meet Northwestern's Lauren Lui and Georgia Rose with a trip to the semis on the line.
One day after experiencing little trouble in their opening round match, Barte and Burdette coasted again. Ranked No. 8 in the country, Barte and Burdette are now 25-7 overall this year. The duo has been extremely hot recently, riding an 11-match winning streak while posting an 13-6 mark against nationally-ranked opponents.
