Tempe, Ariz. -- The top-ranked Stanford women's tennis team (14-0, 3-0 Pac-10) defeated 10th-ranked Arizona State (3-1, 1-1 Pac-10) 6-1 today at the Robson Player Facility in Tempe, Ariz. The win extended the Cardinal win streak to 32-matches, dating back to March 5, 1999.
Playing in her first match as the top-ranked singles player in the nation, freshman Laura Granville (Chicago, Ill.) cruised past ASU's Kerry Giardino for a 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 2 singles. Sophomore Marissa Irvin (Santa Monica, Calif.), ranked fifth by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, won her tenth match of the season with a 6-3, 6-2 win over 52nd-ranked Karin Palme of ASU at No. 1 singles.
Sophomore Gabriela Lastra (Reno, Nev.) defeated Arizona State's only other ranked player, 92nd-ranked Mhairi Brown, 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 at No. 5.
Stanford captured the only singles match of the afternoon, with Irvin and senior Teryn Ashley (Chestnut Hills, Mass.) defeating Faye DeVera and Celena McCoury 8-1.
Stanford travels to Arizona for a noon match against the 26th-ranked Wildcats tomorrow.
