Women's Tennis Fares Well in Rained-Out Classic

1998 National Collegiate Tennis Classic washed out

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif.- The fifth-ranked Stanford women's tennis team fared well in the rain-shortened 1998 National Collegiate Tennis Classic at the exclusive Sherwood Country Club in Thousand Oaks, Calif. The tournament, which was to begin on Friday, did not get underway until Saturday due to rain. The late start prevented the completion of the tourney, as play ended today with the women's singles competition advancing only to the semifinal round.

Stanford sophomore Teryn Ashley, ranked 10th in the nation and the tourney's No. 1 seed, used a first round bye and victories over Arizona State's Katy Propstra (6-4, 6-2) and UCLA's Elizabeth Schmidt (6-4, 6-3) to advance to the semifinal round where she was to face teammate Ania Bleszynski. Bleszynski, a Thousand Oaks, Calif. native, upset the No. 7 seed Kim Gates of Texas 6-4, 6-0 and knocked off teammate Jennifer Heiser 7-5, 7-5 to advance to the semifinals. Stanford senior Julie Scott, the No. 2 seed, was upset in the third round 7-6 (9), 1-6, 6-3 by Arizona's Vicky Maes.
