Stanford Nearly Perfect on First Day of Northwest Rolex Regional Tournament
STANFORD, Calif. - The opening day of the 1997 Women's
Northwest Rolex Regional Tennis Tournament, held at Stanford's
Taube Family Tennis Stadium, went as expected with almost all
of the seeded players/teams advancing through the early rounds.
The day's biggest upset came in the singles draw as
California's Amy Jensen, ranked 23rd in the country and seeded
third in the tournament, fell to Washington's Zuzana Stunova in
2-6, 6-3, 6-4. All of the remaining singles seeds advanced
without dropping a set. On the doubles side, Stanford's
Jennifer Heiser and Sarah Pestieau, playing in her first
collegiate tournament, knocked off the tourney's No. 8 seed,
Tunde Nagy and Patryjca Gadjzik of Washington State, 8-3. All
doubles matches were played pro-set style.
Overall, Stanford fared very well on the day, dropping only one
of 14 matches. The defending national champions were paced by
seniors Julie Scott and Ania Bleszynski. Scott, the
fifth-ranked singles player in the nation and the tournament's
No. 1 seed, advanced to the third round with a bye and a 6-2,
6-0 victory over Oregon's Sarah Colistro. Scott and
Bleszynski, the tourney's No. 1 seeded doubles team, advanced
with a 8-2 win over Idaho's Rachel Dive and Katrina Burke.
Scott will face Burke in third round singles action tomorrow.
Pestieau (New York, NY/Lycee Francais) turned in a spectacular
performance in her first collegiate showing. In addition to
the doubles victory with Heiser, Pestieau captured her first
two singles matches to advance to the third round. Heiser
(Stockton, CA/Lincoln HS) also won her first two matches and
will face California's Amanda Augustus, the 18th-ranked player
in the nation and seeded No. 2 in the tournament, in third
round action.
The tournament will continue tomorrow at 8:00 a.m. with
consolation singles play. The third round of the singles draw
will begin at 9:00 a.m.
