STANFORD, Calif. - Stanford's Julie Scott captured the 1997 Northwest Rolex Regional Tennis Tournament singles title with a 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 victory over teammate Teryn Ashley. Scott, a senior from Austin, Tex. (Stephen F. Austin HS), held off her younger teammate in a match that lasted two-and-a-half hours due to a rain delay. The rain began to fall with Scott leading 3-0 in the third set, forcing the two competitors to complete the match in the Taube Family Tennis Stadium indoor court.

With the win, Scott, the nation's fifth-ranked singles player, improved to 11-1 and picked up her second title in as many tournaments this season. She opened the 1997-98 season by winning the consolation singles title at the Riviera All-American Championships two weeks ago. The win also assured Scott a spot in the 1998 Rolex National Individual Championships, to be played February 5-8 in Dallas, Tex. The loss dropped Ashley, a sophomore from Chestnut Hill, Mass. (Brookline HS), to 5-2 on the year. Her only other defeat came against the nation's top-ranked player, Mississippi's Agnes Muzamel, in the second round of the Riviera All-American Championships.

Unfortunately, the rain did not stop and the tournament moved along one match at a time, forcing the cancellation of the consolation singles title match between California's Stephanie Tibbets and Pacific's Mari Maattanen. Tibbits advanced to the consolation final with a 6-4, 6-3 win over teammate Amy Jensen, while Maattanen reached the final by way of a 6-0, 6-0 sweep of Portland's Erin Smith.

In doubles action, Stanford advanced two teams to tomorrow's doubles final, which will begin at 2:00 p.m., assuring the defending national champion Cardinal a sweep of the tournament. The top-seed duo of Scott and Bleszynski, who topped teammates Jennifer Heiser and Sarah Pestieau 6-4, 6-0, will meet the fourth-seeded team of Anne Kremer and Teryn Ashley, 5-7, 6-3, 6-1 semifinal winners over California's Amanda Augustus and Jensen. The Golden Bear team was seeded second in the tourney.
