Stanford Suffers Two First Round Losses

Upsets Set the Tone for Opening of Riviera All-American Championships

PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif.--Upsets dominated the scene at the opening day of the Riviera All-American Champiosnhips at the Riviera Tennis Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif.

Four of the eight seeded players in the tournament, which feautures the top collegiate players in the nation, fell in the first round, including Stanford senior Julie Scott. Scott, the fifth-ranked singles player in the nation and the tournament's No. 4 seed, dropped her opening match in straight sets 6-2, 6-4 to USD's 13th-ranked Zuzana Lesenarova. Scott rebounded however, winning four straight matches in the consolation bracket. Cardinal sophomore Teryn Ashley, a main draw qualifier, captured her first round match easily, dispatching UCLA's Elizabeth Schmidt 6-0, 6-0. Ashley will resume action tomorrow against Mississippi's Agnes Muzamel, the No. 1 ranked player in the nation and the tournament's No.1 seed.

The doubles tandem of Scott and senior Ania Bleszynski, the third-seeded doubles pair, also dropped their first round match, falling 7-5, 6-4 to William and Mary's Lauren Nikolaus and Michelle O.
