STANFORD, CA - The fifth-ranked Stanford women's tennis team, in its first match since capturing the 1998 USTA/ITA National Women's Indoor Team Championship, defeated Saint Mary's 6-0 in a rain-shortened match. With the win, the Cardinal improved to 12-0 on the season and extended its winning streak to 31 matches. With the loss, Saint Mary's fell to 2-4 on the season.
Prior to the end of the first set at each of the singles positions, the rain began and forced play to resume on the Taube Family Tennis Stadium Indoor court. Because of time constraints, the match was called after singles play concluded. Stanford took all six singles positions in straight sets, dropping just 10 games along the way. Sophomore Teryn Ashley (Chestnut Hill, MA/Brookline HS), currently ranked seventh in the nation, won her match at the No. 2 position 6-0, 6-1 over Mili Shah to run her unblemished collegiate dual match record to 34-0. Ashley also upped her overall season record to 26-3. Junior Marisa Maclennan (Bakersfield, CA/Santa Catalina HS) and senior Heidi Stalla (Mountain View, CA/Mt. Hermon HS), competing in duals for the first time this season, won their respective matches at the five and six positions, respectively.
Stanford will begin defense of its unprecedented 10 consecutive Pac-10 Southern Division titles this Saturday, February 28, as it travels to the East Bay to take on seventh-ranked California at 12:00 Noon. Cal is the only other school in the division, which includes No. 2 UCLA, No. 8 Arizona State, No. 23 Arizona and No. 26 USC, to have won the division title, claiming the inaugural crown in 1987.
