Scott Gains Sweep of Rolex Tennis Indoors

Feb. 8, 1998

DALLAS, Texas - Stanford senior Julie Scott defeated William & Mary's Lauren Nikolaus 6-1, 7-6 (3) in the singles final of the 1998 Rolex National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, the third leg of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Grand Slam. With the win, Scott, who along with teammate Ania Bleszynski captured the doubles title yesterday, became just the third woman in the tournament's 15-year history to sweep the singles and doubles titles. The doubles title was Scott and Bleszynski's second straight.

Scott, a native of Austin, Tex. (Stephen F. Austin HS), needed only 20 minutes to take the first set 6-1. But Nikolaus stayed close in the second, breaking Scott's serve at 4-5 and 5-6 to force the tie-breaker.

"I wasn't worried (in the second set) because I was still playing well," said Scott, who is No. 14 in the Rolex Collegiate Rankings. "She just happened to pull out two great games on my serve. I just tried to stay focused and come out strong in the tie-breaker."

"With those two, it's a little bit about who is controlling the point in the rally," said Stanford assistant coach Lele Forood. "So I think Julie got in control a little bit better in the tie-breaker."

With the win, Scott improved to 18-3 overall this season and 7-1 in her two appearances at the Rolex Intercollegiates. She is also 10-1 in three doubles appearances with Bleszynski and Kim Shasby.
