Dallas - With the second day complete at the 1998 Rolex National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, a tournament featuring the top collegiate tennis players in the nation, four members of the defending national champion Stanford men's and women's tennis teams are poised to make a claim as the nation's best.
Both Stanford doubles entrants - Bob and Mike Bryan and Julie Scott/Ania Bleszynski - reached the finals of their respective doubles draws. The Bryan brothers defeated James and Thomas Blake of Harvard, 6-2, 7-6 (1), to reach the championship match. They will face Martin Dvoracek and Pavel Kudsrnac of Oklahoma State in the final. Scott and Bleszynski defeated two-time defending NCAA champions and No. 1 seed Dawn Buth and Stephanie Nickitas (Florida) 0-6, 6-4, 7-6 (6), to reach the championship match. They will face Karen Goldstein and Vanessa Webb of Duke in the final. Scott and Bleszynski had defeated Buth and Nickitas in the semifinals of last year's tournament as well.
Scott, an Austin, Tex. native (Stephen F. Austin HS) and 1998 Stanford team captain, also advanced to the semifinals of the singles draw with two straight-set victories today. Scott, currently ranked 14th in the nation, defeated No. 36 Elisa Penalvo of Marquette 6-1, 6-3 to reach the semifinals, where she will face No. 11 Zuzana Lesenarova of the University of San Diego for a trip to the finals.
