Dallas, Texas - Members of the Stanford men's and women's tennis teams advanced at the Rolex National Intercollegiate Indoor Tennis Championships, the third leg of the 1997-98 Intercollegiate Tennis Association Grand Slam. The tournament is hosted by Southern Methodist University at the Brookhaven Country Club.
The upset of the day came when Steven Baldas of Georgia defeated No. 1 seed Stanford sophomore Bob Bryan in the first round of singles play, 6-3, 6-4. Mike Bryan and Alex Kim, both Stanford players, reached tomorrow's second round of singles with victories. In doubles, the Cardinal's pair of Bryan/Bryan have advanced to tomorrow's semifinals with two wins today.
On the women's side, Stanford senior Julie Scott defeated Karen Goldstein of Duke, 6-4, 6-1, to reach tomorrow's second round of singles. Seeded sophomore Teryn Ashley was upset by Christie Sim of Kansas in the first round. In doubles, Scott and Ania Bleszynski set up a re-match for tomorrow of last year's semifinals in the same tournament with the number one seeds Dawn Buth and Stephanie Nickitas of Florida. Scott/Bleszynski fought hard for their quarterfinal win today as they defeated Bilah/Merrick of Richmond, 6-4, 7-6 (2). The Stanford pair was down 4-1 in the first and 5-1 in the second, but rebounded in each set to capture the victory.
Play continues tomorrow with two rounds of singles and one round of doubles.
