Stanford, Calif. -
Stanford alumnus Bridget Finn will join the Cardinal synchronized swimming staff for the 2006-07 season announced Head Coach Heather Olson yesterday. The former Olympian will return to the Farm and assist in a variety of aspects of team training and choreography.
"Bridget has always been passionate about Stanford synchro and I was thrilled she was interested in the assistant coach position," said Olson. "We already have a strong report together after swimming together for many years. I know it is going to be a smooth transition for the team and am looking forward to another great year."
Finn, who graduated from Stanford in 1997, was one of the synchronized swimming program's first scholarship athletes. The Buffalo, NY native joined the squad as a freshman in 1993, the year synchronized swimming became a varsity sport at Stanford. She represented the Cardinal for four years, and competed with Olson during the 1997 season.
Following her career at Stanford, Finn trained for the 2000 Olympics. With Olson, she went on to compete with the team that took fifth at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia.
"Bridget has great ideas for routine choreography and is also a great technical coach," said Olson. "Her experience as a Stanford athlete makes coaching here an easy fit."
Finn retired from the sport after the 2000 Olympics and began a career as a journalist in San Francisco. She has been working as a writer and editor for Business 2.0 and as a web editor for strategy+business.
"Being away from the synchro world has given me the perspective I've needed to come back," said Finn. "Coaching is such a rewarding job. Helping others succeed brings me great happiness, and I hope to do that this year at Stanford."
Finn replaces Shannon Gordon, who recently left Stanford to pursue a career in teaching after five years as Olson's assistant. Gordon played a major role in the program's success, serving the Cardinal program for nine years as an athlete and coach. Gordon was a part of all four of Stanford's National Championships, taking home the title as an athlete in '98 and '99 and as a coach in '05 and '06.
The Stanford synchronized swimming program repeated as National Champions in 2006, with a top finish at the Collegiate Nationals in April. In 2007, all nine athletes will return for the Cardinal, as the team pursues its third straight title.
"I am extremely committed to Stanford and it gives me great pride to see how successful the synchro program has become," said Finn. "I want to see that continue and flourish throughout the years, and am excited to be a part of the team again."
