BUFFALO, N.Y. - The Stanford synchronized swimming team captured first place in the team semifinal, Friday, at the Tonawanda Aquatic and Fitness Center in the 35th annual U.S. Collegiate National Championships. The event, hosted by Canisius College, runs Mar. 17-19.
The Cardinal, which is seeking its seventh U.S. Collegiate national title, is currently in first place after the completion of the semifinal rounds.
Stanford scored a 93.375 in the team semifinal, topping its competition. Swimming for the Cardinal were Alex Bollaidlaw, Madison Crocker, Morgan Fuller, Jessica Guenther, Wendy Lu, Olivia Morgan, Corinne Smith and Koko Urata. The Ohio State `A' team finished second with a score of 92.500. Rounding out the top-5 were the University of Incarnate Word `A' (90.625), Lindenwood University `A' (89.500) and the Ohio State `B' team (88.750).
Ten Cardinal swimmers participated in the `A' Figures technical competition. Urata placed in the top-5 for the Cardinal, taking fourth with a score of 79.548. The Ohio State's Yuliya Maryanko won the event with an 81.533. Finishing second was the University of Incarnate Word's Saki Fujise with an 81.164. Taking third was Svetlana Ponkratova from Canisius College (79.698), while the Incarnate Word's Rosilyn Tegart rounded out the top-5 with a 79.396.
Other Stanford scores in the `A' Figures are as follows - Morgan (79.290, 6th), Bollaidlaw (79.175, 7th), Maria Koroleva (78.920, 9th), Crocker (77.856, 11th), Guenther (76.396, 13th), Smith (76.109, 17th), Gayle Lee (76.078, 18th), Lu (75.255, 23rd) and Fuller (74.729, 25th).
Competing in the `B' Figures for Stanford was true freshman Leigh Haldeman
. A native of Kenmore, Wash., Haldeman held her own and placed second with a score of 67.297.
The finals for all four events will be held on Saturday, Mar. 19 beginning at 8:30 a.m. ET. With a first-place finish in the `A' Figures (12 points) and second in the `B' Figures (9 points), the Cardinal holds 21 team points heading into the finals.
