China's Ye Shiwen went 2:04.64 for a championship record and her first world short course championship gold after having previously won three silver.

Long-time race leader Katinka Hosszu of Hungary held on to win the silver medal in 2:04.72, while Great Britain's Hannah Miley won bronze with 2:07.12.

Double Olympic champion Ye had been among the medal positions throughout the race, but trailed Hosszu until the final turn when she made her move.
