ISTANBUL, Turkey - Maya DiRado finished fifth in the 400m individual medley Wednesday during the FINA Short Course World Championships at Sinan Erdem Arena. The Stanford women's swimmer was second among the eight-person field after the first 50m (29.01) before falling back to register the fifth-place showing in 4:28.55.

Hannah Miley of Great Britain won the gold to become the first British women to win the discipline at the championships.

While China's Ye Shiwen raced her down over the freestyle leg, Miley was strong enough to edge Ye out by 0.19 seconds in a championship record of 4:23.14.

Former Stanford standout Julia Smit is the current world record holder in the event, setting the 4:21.04 benchmark in 2009.

DiRado now looks ahead to competing in the 100 individual medley on Friday.
