STANFORD, Calif.-- Stanford junior Aaron Wayne (100 free), sophomore Maya DiRado (200 back) and incoming freshman Drew Cosgarea (200 IM) all won C Finals while the 4x200 men's relay team was edged by SwimMAC Carolina for the national title to highlight the Cardinal on Friday at the U.S. National Championships.
With one day to go, the Stanford women are in second place with 527 points behind the Tucson Ford Dealers' 571.5 points, made up of University of Arizona swimmers. On the men's side, Stanford is 2.5 points out of first with 603 points, behind Tucson Ford Dealers' 605.5 points.
Incoming freshman David Nolan (fifth) and Cosgarea (10th) had two of the fastest 200 IM times on the night, while DiRado chipped in the fourth-fastest overall time in the 200 back.
In the closest race of the night, Wayne was out-touched by Kip Darmody, who touched at 7:20.55, ahead of Wayne's 7:20.62. Stanford had led for most of the race, as Morgan Priestly led after the first 200 meters and Bobby Bollier and Rob Andrews held off North Carolina over the next 400 meters. Wayne remained in front, leading by four-tenths of a second with 50 meters to go, before the final push went to Darmody.
Wayne opened up the night session with a win in the C Finals of the 100 free with a time of 50.50. Stanford was nearly 2-for-2, as Alex Coville led the consolation finals at the halfway point, but fell back to fourth with a time of 50.11 for 14th overall behind winner Thomas Shields (49.77). Stanford had four swimmers in the top-25 led by Coville.
Nolan, the prep record holder in the event, swam 2:01.14, four hundreths from medaling and behind NCAA Swimmer of the Year Conor Dwyer's winning time of 1:59.19. Classmate, Cosgarea poured it on over the last 50 meters of the 200 IM, after moving up from eighth to sixth over the first 150 meters, to win the C Finals with a time of 2:02.22. All told, Stanford had four Cardinal, all swimming for The Farm next season, in the top-30.
DiRado, swimming in her fifth top-30 race of the championship, swam 2:16.00 in the morning prelims, only to improve that mark to 2:11.14 to win the C Final, leading from wire to wire. DiRado was previously second in the 400 IM, third in the 200 IM, third in the 4x200 relay and fifth in the 4x100 relay. Florida's Elizabeth Beisel won her second national title (2:08.81), as DiRado's time was fourth only to the top three A Finalists.
In an A Final of the 200 fly that featured three Olympians, 2008 Olympian and Stanford's own Elaine Breeden after starting off second, finished fifth with a time of 2:20.28. Sophomore Andie Taylor was tenth (2:12.25).
Next week continues a busy month for the Cardinal swim program. While many of the incoming freshmen will be at Junior Nationals at Stanford, Maya DiRado, Kate Dwelley, Felicia Lee, Liz Smith, Andie Taylor, Sam Woodward, Bobby Bollier, Curtis Lovelace, David Mosko (U.S.), Matthew Swanston, Michael Zoldos (Canada), Geoff Cheah (Hong Kong) and Eirik Ravnan (Norway) will be at the World University Games starting on August 14 in China. Six, past, present and future divers will also be at the AT&T Diving Nationals starting on August 9 at UCLA.
