IRVINE, Calif.-- Young and old converged as Stanford recruit Felicia Lee and graduate Julia Smit highlighted the Cardinal on the first day of the ConocoPhillips National Championships, both reaching “A” Finals.

Lee, a Baltimore native and accomplished butterflier, finished fifth in the “A” Finals of the 100-meter butterfly with a time of 58.44, ahead of Cardinal graduate Elaine Breeden, who was 16th and Kate Dwelley, who won the “C” Finals with a time of 59.97 and was 17th overall.

Smit, one of the most decorated swimmers in school history, along with Breeden, was eighth in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:14.01. Liz Smith reached the “B” Finals and was 11th overall (2:15.38).

Another recruit, Andie Taylor, out of Seattle, was 11th in the “B” Finals with a mark of 4:11.86.

The event runs through Saturday and live coverage is available on swimnetwork.com and NBC on August 7 and 8. Most trials begin at 9 a.m with finals starting at 6 p.m. Results from this event will help choose the American team to compete at the Pan Pacific Championships starting on August 18.
