LOS ANGELES-- Curtis Lovelace (200 breast) and former Cardinal Julia Smit (200 IM) both won events on the third day of the Los Angeles Open to highlight the Cardinal in the Southland. Felicia Lee (200 IM), Liz Smith (200 breast), Sam Woodward (50 free) all finished third in separate events.
Lovelace swam a best of 2:15.65 in the 200 breast finals after having the third-best prelim time. John Criste also made the A Finals, finishing eighth (2:18.10).
Smit, the former NCAA Champion in one of her signature events, swam 2:13.44 as Lee, a freshman last season, was third (2:14.93) and former Cardinal Elaine Breeden was fifth (2:18.50). Andi Murez won the consolation final (2:19.44).
Also finishing third on Saturday was Smith, a recent graduate, in the 200 breast (2:31.76), two seconds behind winner Andrea Kropp. Woodward, who was .32 seconds behind Australian Bronte Campbell in the 50 free, finished ahead of teammates, Smit, who was seventh (26.04) and Betsy Webb, who was eighth (26.10).
Two Cardinal men won the C Finals-- Mason Shaw in the 200 breast (2:22.90) and Andrew Saeta in the 50 free (23.57).
The LA Open, hosted at the Socal Swim Club, will run through Sunday. In China later tonight on the West Coast, former diver, Cassidy Krug will compete in the three-meter synchronized championships.
