OMAHA, Neb. - Stanford women's swimming has added two more names to its illustrious list of all-time Olympians, as junior Elaine Breeden won the 200 meter butterfly final at the USA Olympic Swimming Trials and fellow junior Julia Smit was chosen for the 4 x 200 meter freestyle relay team. Both swimmers will participate in their first Olympic Games when they travel to Beijing, China for the 44th Olympiad. The swimming events are slated for Aug. 9-21.
Breeden, who earlier in the Trials finished second in the 100 meter fly, captured the 200 meter butterfly final Thursday evening with a time of 2:06.75 - .58 second ahead of the second place swimmer. In her first two years on The Farm, Breeden has already posted the fastest 200 meter fly time in school history, while winning the 2007 NCAA championship in the event and finishing second in 2008.
Smit has enjoyed an excellent Olympic Trials thus far, finishing third in both the 400 meter individual medley and the 200 meter freestyle. She will join Katie Hoff, Allison Schmitt and Caroline Burckle on the U.S. 4 x 200 meter free relay squad. Tomorrow night, she will swim in the 100 meter free finals.
Joining Smit in the Qwest Center pool on the 4th of July will be Andrea Axtell, who will compete in the 200 meter backstroke prelims.
