Godsoe Onto Finals of 100 Back, Bal and Breeden Short at Trials

OMAHA, Neb.-- Stanford alum Eugene Godsoe will advance to Wednesday's finals in the 100-meter back of the U.S. Olympic Trials after finishing sixth in the semifinals with a time of 53.88.

Fellow alum Randall Bal was two-hundreths of a second from heading into the eight-man final, finishing ninth in the 16-man field with a time of 54.53.

Alumnae Elaine Breeden fell short in the 100 fly finals, finishing fifth with a time of 58.43 in the finals after top-three times in Monday's prelims and semifinals. The former NCAA champion had posted the second (58.18) and third (58.38) fastest times in the semifinals and preliminaries the day before in the 100 fly. Breeden qualified for the 2008 Olympics after winning the 200 fly, an event she ranks fourth in this year. Her 58.18 time this year in the 100 fly, was .03 better than her time four years ago.

In the morning session on Tuesday, Stanford had three affiliated swimmers in the top-20 of the 100 back. Following Godsoe's sixth place showing (54.26), Bal was 12th (55.12). Freshman David Nolan finished 19th in the prelims (55.58) of the 100 back and did not advance.  Nolan also just missed the top-16 semifinals of the 200 free by finishing 18th with a time of 1:49.95.

On Wednesday morning, Stanford has five swimmers ranked in the top-20 across three events. Bobby Bollier (third) and David Mosko (eighth) are in the top-eight of the 200 fly, Maya DiRado (fifth) and Felicia Lee (17th) are in the top-20 of the 200 IM and Kate Dwelley is 15th in the 200 free.

FORMAT: Shorter events, in the 100 and 200-meter category with consist of a prelims, semifinals (top-16) and finals (top-8). Longer events, 400-meters and longer will have a prelim and finals (top-8). The event is broadcast throughout the week on NBC, NBC Sports Network and also available via live webcast at www.usasswimming.org.

To make an Olympic team, a maximum of 26 men and 26 women are chosen. Since the format has been adopted the top four finishers in the 100 and 200 freestylers, as well as the top two finishers in each other event have made Team USA. Second place finishers are added based on world rankings in 2011 and 2012, after the top-four 100/200 freestylers and the winners of each event are chosen.
