FEDERAL WAY, Wash.-- Before a record crowd just outside the Emerald City, Stanford alumnae Cassidy Krug earned her first Olympic berth after winning the 3-Meter on Saturday with a score of 1094.85.
Krug joins Stanford freshman Kristian Ipsen and their coach, Dr. Rick Schavone in London. Ipsen won the 3-Meter synchro on Friday and the 34-year head Stanford diving coach was added as an assistant. It will be the first Olympics for all three. Ipsen heads into the 3-Meter finals on Sunday with the top score.
Krug and Christina Loukas were the top two finishers in the 3-Meter, as Loukas finished with 1017.85 points for second place. Both will represent Team USA in late July.
Krug, the 26-year old former NCAA champion maintained her semifinal lead and led by 70 points by the midway point on Saturday. On her fourth dive, a reverse 2 ½ somersault, she scored 75.00 points thanks to 8.5's. Her fifth and final dive, 19 days shy of her 27th birthday, Krug produced two 9.0's and three 8.5's for 76.50 points on a forward 2 ½ somersault.
Krug opened up her final round with four 9.0's on an inward 2 ½ somersault pike for 79.50 points and then maintained the lead with 8.5's on a forward 3 ½ somersault pike on her second dive. Krug came into Saturday's finals with a combined score of 718.85 over the prelim and semifinals.
Ipsen can earn a a second berth on Sunday as the top seed in the men's 3-Meter on Sunday at noon. The top two individual scores per event earn a spot on the Olympic team. NBC will tape delay the women's final and air the men's final on Sunday starting at noon.
