Mercury News Talks to Krug
FEDERAL WAY, Wash.-- Stanford freshman Kristian Ipsen, alumni Dwight Dumais and Cassidy Krug and incoming freshmen Lillian Hinrichs and Kelly Markle will compete at the U.S. Olympic Diving Trials starting on Sunday, just outside of Seattle.
Ipsen, Dumais and Markle are set to compete in the 3-Meter synchro and individual 3-Meter springboard events; Krug will compete in the 3-Meter; and Hinrichs will compete in the 10-meter platform.
Ipsen blew through his first collegiate season, winning the NCAA title in the 3-Meter, while also finishing second in the 1-Meter. He also won both Zone Regional championships in the 1- and 3-meters and all 12 regular season dual events. He will team with Troy Dumais in the 3-Meter syncho starting on Monday. The duo were silver medalists at the 2010 World Cup and won the 2011 and 2012 National titles. Individually, he won the 3-Meter title at the Summer and Winter Nationals in 2011, finishing first or second at the last four national championships.
Krug, an 11-time national champion, won twice in 2011 and another time in 2012. Recently she was eighth at London's FINA World Cup in the 3-Meter in 2012 and second at the Pan Am Games last fall in Mexico. As a collegian, she won the 2007 NCAA titles in the 1- and 3-Meters.
Dumais, one of three brothers competing out of Ventura County, finished ninth at Winter Nationals in 2012 in the 3-Meter. In the 3-Meter, he has scored top-10 finishes in five national championship events the last three year, after being a five-time All-American and two-time Pac-10 Champion at Stanford.
For Markle at the last Junior National Championships in 2011, the Woodlands, Texas native, was third in the 1-Meter, 11th in the platform and 16th in the 3-Meter. She was second in the 3-Meter synchro as well. She was also 12th at the senior national championships that same year. For Hinrichs, the Nebraska native was third in the platform and 3-Meter events at Junior Nationals. During the 2011 season, she won all 13 regional events, in and around the midwest.
The synchro events are on Sunday and Monday, with the finals on Thursday and Friday. The women's springboard begins on Tuesday, and the men's event begins on Wednesday. The women's platform starts on Wednesday. The women's 3-Meter finals is on Saturday and the men's finals are on Sunday. NBC Sports Network (formerly Versus) will broadcast the event from June 19-22. NBC will televise five hours of live coverage on Saturday and Sunday.
To earn an Olympic berth, the top two finishers with the highest cumulative score will be selected. The top synchro team from each event will also advance to London.
