STANFORD, Calif. - Junior Carmen Stellar of the second-ranked Stanford women's swimming and diving team has been named the Pac-10 Women's Diver of the Month for January 2009, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today. This marks the first monthly honor for Stellar and the fifth all-time for Stanford.
Stellar was outstanding during January, winning five diving competitions to help the Cardinal sweep four Pac-10 dual meets and remain undefeated on the season. The Arcadia, Calif. native recorded six "A" qualifying scores for the upcoming NCAA Zone E Diving Championships in March, while she won both diving events in a pair of dual meets - January 23 at Arizona State and January 30 vs. No. 20 UCLA.
Perhaps the highlight of Stellar's month, however, came in Stanford's thrilling 150.5-147.5 victory at seventh-ranked and defending national champion Arizona. She won the 1-meter competition in Tucson with a score of 292.50 - 30.67 points more than the second-place finisher - and finished third on the 3-meter, tallying 12 individual points that helped make the difference in Stanford's narrow victory.
Stellar's top score of the month came in her 3-meter victory vs. UCLA, as she established a dual meet career-high with a score of 300.98. Her other "A" qualifying scores came on the 1-meter (285.65) and 3-meter at Arizona State (288.15), the 1-meter vs. UCLA (280.95) and the 3-meter vs. USC (291.06).
Stanford has just one more dual meet remaining before the 2009 Pac-10 Championships, as the Cardinal will travel across the Bay to face No. 9 California on Saturday, February 14 in Berkeley. That meet is scheduled to start at 12:00 p.m. PT.
