STANFORD, Calif.-- Stanford's Kristian Ipsen easily won the 1-meter and Stephanie Phipps held off Cal's Molly Hayes for the women's 3-meter title on the first of three days of the Stanford Diving Invite.
Ipsen tallied a best of 420.75, ahead of Stanford's Connor Kuremsky (329.85), Trevor Graifman (299.30) and Cardinal Noah Garcia (297.15).
Phipps scored a mark of 321.80, ahead of Bears' Hayes (307.85) and Kelsey Heiken (299.05). Phipps took the lead for good after her fourth dive, scoring three 7.5's to overcome an eight-point Hayes lead and give herself a 7.9 advantage. After Hayes and Phipps traded 6.5's on their fifth dives, Phipps three 6.0's were enough for the win.
While Ipsen was securing the finals win, a battle for the top three spots ensued. Fellow freshman, Kuremsky moved into second place after his second dive, three 7.0's. He kept his lead for good after his fifth dive, paced by four 7.0's. Graifman maintained his third place finish, despite just a one point lead over Stanford's Taylor Sishc with one dive to go. Gaifman's four 6.5's secured the third place trophy.
Winning consolation finals were Amy Kilby (San Jose State) with a 248.85 score in the 3-meter and Cal's Tyler Pullen (288.90) in the 1-meter.
In the preliminary round, Ipsen led for five of the six rounds, scoring a leading prelim mark of 347.80 over Kuremsky (326.05). Phipps led from wire to wire, finishing with a score of 308.50, 26 points over Cal's Heiken (282.00) on the women's side.
Phipps opened up the prelims with three 8.0's and then followed that up with 7.5's on her second dive. After the fourth round, she built a 34-point advantage. Heiken would move up from four to second place for the final two dives based on 6.5's on each of her last two dives.
The invitational continues on Saturday at noon with the women's 1-meter and men's 3-meter and on Sunday starting at 11 a.m with the platform.
