Stanford Dominates at Northwestern Invitational
Lady swimmer's break five pool records.
EVANSTON, Ill. - The Stanford women's swim team found continued success at the Northwestern Invitational Sunday beating out Northwestern 791-458 in overall points. Day two of the Invitational saw Stanford swimmers take wins in nine of eleven events and break five pool records.
In the 50-meter freestyle, Stanford nabbed the top four spots in the finals and Catherine Fox set a pool record (23.12) during event preliminaries. Fox finished the finals in 23.16, followed by Siobhan Cropper (23.68) and Gabrielle Rose (23.78). Jessica Amey completed the Cardinal sweep of the event finishing fourth at 23.98.
Fox, who holds the pool record for the 100-meter backstroke (54.43), led the event's final finishing at 54.47. Second in the 100m backstroke went to Stanford's Chantal Rawn (56.78).
In the 500-meter freestyle final, Stanford's Amy Oberhelman won the event and set a pool record in the process with a time of 4:48.64. Stanford's Lauren Thies finished second at 4:53.65.
In the 200-meter individual medley final Stanford took the top five spots and Rose set a pool record finishing 2:02.12. She was followed by Fox (2:01.25), Misty Hyman (2:02.98), Chantal Rawn (2:03.00) and Alison Fealey (2:04.06).
It was yet another pool record for Stanford in the 400-meter medley relay when Squad B finished first and set the new mark at 1:34.11. Squad A was second at 1:34.16. In the 200-meter freestyle relay, Squad A finished first at 3:43.10 and squad B finished second at 3:48.03.
Misty Hyman set a new pool record in the 100-meter butterfly preliminary finishing at 54.40. In the 200-meter freestyle prelim, Oberhelman (1:51.76) and Rose (1:52.17) were first and second.
In the 400-meter individual medley prelims, Stanford's Fealey (4:25.82), Thies (4:26.68), Oberhelman (4:26.81), Evi-Lynn Byer (4:27.76) and Jodi Jackson (4:35.30) swept the top five spots.
In other final round action, Stanford won the 400-meter individual medley with Thies (4:20.57), Fealey (4:20.90) and Oberhelman (4:24.98) taking the top three spots. In the 100-meter butterfly final, Fox (53.91), Amey (54.57 and Rose (55.86) swept top honors for Stanford.
In the 200-meter freestyle final, Rose (1:49.80), Oberhelman (1:51.10) and Rawn (1:51.56) continued the Stanford dominance of Northwestern. In the 100-meter breastroke final, Elin Austevoll took first for Stanford finishing at 1:02.95.
The Cardinal finished off the day by taking first and second in the final event, the 800-meter freestyle relay. Squad A finished at 7:26.45 and squad B finished at 7:28.15.
