Redwood City, Calif. -
The Stanford Women's Squash team kicked off the 2007-2008 season with a bang this weekend when the team traveled to the Pacific Athletic Club in Redwood City on Saturday to play a pre-season, exhibition match against women from across the Bay Area. Winning all eleven matches with only one going into five sets, the Cardinal appeared in mid-season form as they began their second campaign as a varsity sport at Stanford.
Working their way up from club sport status to being the only varsity squash team west of the Mississippi River, the Cardinal Women have shown a competitive fire that's hard to combat. Not only did Stanford win all 11 matches, but six players did not even lose a single game. Sam Buechner '11, a talented freshman hailing from Newport, RI, was the star of the match winning an exciting tight 5-game match by just a single point in the final game. The Cardinal powerhouses of 2006 National Champion Lily Lorentzen, Katy Brewster, and Brooskie Riley were also in good form as they each won easily in 3-set sweeps.
The match against the Pacific Athletic Club was great preparation for the to start of the upcoming regular season which begins in just a week. Stanford will fly east this weekend to take on perennial contenders Yale, Williams, and Harvard.
