STANFORD, Calif. -
The Stanford squash teams continue their great work in the community. After a successful 2008-09 school year where Xtreme Squash did outstanding work at Kennedy Middle School, the Cardinal have decided to continue the program in 2009-10.
Xtreme Squash is a non-profit 501c(3) organization that is devoted to community outreach. Under the directorship of Stanford squash coach Mark Talbott and TW Wiedmann Ph.D., the Cardinal established a partnership with Kennedy Middle School and have expanded this year to include Selby Lane School.
Kennedy is the largest middle school in Redwood City with 900 students.
Selby Lane is a smaller school, also located in Redwood City. Both schools serve some economically challenged neighborhoods.
The program runs throughout the school year on Thursday afternoons with two hours for each session, which includes one hour of squash play, and one hour of academic enrichment. The academic enrichment portion included mini classes on a variety of subject matters, coined Mini-College.
The academic enrichment portion of the program is taught by the Stanford men and women's squash teams. Twelve students kids from the Kennedy School and ten students from Selby Lane were selected on the basis of their academic achievement and potential.
Please contact Mark Talbott (mtalbott@stanford.edu, 650-725-8699) if you are interested in helping with the program.
