STANFORD, Calif. - The Stanford softball team received an at-large bid to the 2012 NCAA Championship today. The Cardinal (38-17) will begin play on the road in the Lafayette Region.
The Cardinal opens the tournament against Baylor (33-20), while host Louisiana-Lafayette (49-4) will square off against Mississippi Valley State (34-17) at Lamson Park beginning Friday, May 18.
Stanford will be participating in the tournament for the 15th consecutive year, dating back to 1998 when the team made its first postseason appearance in John Rittman's second year as head coach. The Cardinal has won seven regional titles, and made appearances in the Women's College World Series in 2001 and 2004.
Four teams will participate at each of the 16 regional sites in a double-elimination tournament. The regional winners will face off in the May 24-27 Super Regionals, with eight teams advancing to the 2012 WCWS at ASA Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City, May 31- June 6.
Stanford wrapped up the regular season Saturday with a 38-17 overall record and a sixth-place finish in the Pac-12 with an 11-13 mark. The Cardinal is coming off a series win at conference newcomer Utah, taking the final two games in Salt Lake City.
Stanford is 1-1 all-time versus Baylor and 1-0 against Louisiana-Lafayette. The Cardinal and Mississippi Valley State would play in the first meeting between the two programs.
California, the 2012 Pac-12 champion, was named the overall No. 1 seed in the tournament and the conference had eight of its nine teams selected. Should Stanford advance, the team would travel to the winner of the Tempe Region in a Super Regional, which includes No. 3 seed Arizona State, Syracuse, Long Beach State and LIU Brooklyn.
Stanford is 14-1 at a neutral site this season and 5-10 on the road. The Cardinal is 16-13 against the 2012 tournament field.
