Stanford head coach John Rittman
"First of all unless you win the last game it is a hard way to end your year for a great team. In time we will be able to reflect on the great year we had, We didn't play our best ball today but I am proud of the way we prepared for this weekend and the way we handled ourselves."
Expectations of the team this year
"Our pitching was uncertain going into the year. Laura stepped up early and was a true leader for our pitching staff. All year we were looking to see who would step up. Becky blossomed to be our go to pitcher. She has great poise on the mound and holds her emotions well. Becky has a great future for us. Our goal is to win a national championship so when we fall short it is below our expectations."
"It helps to score first and find a way to score runs. They (Tennessee) didn't make any mistakes defensively and sometimes that is all you need. They played well behind Monica."
Leah Nelson, Stanford catcher
Pressure to hit Abbott
" I feel being that she is such a great pitcher that the pressure is on her."
On playing your last game
"I didn't know this was going to be my last game. I did enjoy my time here at Stanford and I had a great time here."
Lauren Lappin, Stanford shortstop
"We had nothing to lose facing Abott. The pressure is on her to be great. She just beat a great team two days in a row."
"It was definitely frustrating today because we could not catch a break, We were hitting the ball well but to players. As my Dad would say, the softball g-ds were not on our side this weekend. They made all the plays and supported Monica defensively."
"She's left-handed and throws hard and has a lot of pitches she makes work for her."
"I think when they scored the run off Becky I was thinking ahead to the if possible game and to save Becky I was thinking Laura could give her a break."
"This game was not indicative of our defense. I believe we were one of the best defensive teams in the Pac-10. A couple of things factored into this today. You can't give a good team outs."
Ralph Weekly, Tennesee head coach
"First of all we are very excited. This is the first time we have had the opportunity to go to a World Series. It is everyone's dream and mine. I respect and care for Stanford's student-athletes and it seems like a lot of things went our way today. Monica pitched outs and we got the key hits."
On Katherine Card (Tennessee leftfielder)
"Katherine Card has always played well. She plays well against the Pac-10 and they are considered to be the best softball conference"
On Tennessee breaking into the softball world
"We worked really hard to bring quality kids to our program. We wanted kids who are mentally tough. To come to Stanford and play in a place like this with their championship history and shut them out two days in a row is a credit to the type of athletes we get. Athletes win championships not coaches."
On getting Monica and that being the reason they are so successful
"They don't call it fastpitch for nothing. It is not called fast run, fas thit but fastpitch. The team with the best pitcher wins."
Monica Abbott, Tennessee pitcher
On being in the area
"Just coming hack here to Stanford is familiar turf. There are a lot of familiar faces here. I needed to focus on being strong ever inning and every pitch"
On only having a few strike outs today and a lot yesterday
"A pitchers job is to make a hitter hit badly, not to strike them out everytime. We had a great team effort today."
On pitching after a 5 run lead
"It took a lot of weight off us. We focused on playing one pitch at a time"
Lindsay Schutzler, Tennessee shortstop
"One of my goals in coming to Tennessee was to make a name for them. It feels great to have accomplished that"
On the 3rd inning
"We had got runners on before and didn't hit them in. When the inning came around we did get the hits and breaks we needed. Everyone came through ... the pinch hitters were getting hits."
