No. 7 Stanford Softball (40-16, 10-11) moved past Cal State Fullerton (37-24), 4-1, today at the NCAA Regional in Fresno. The Cardinal scored three runs in the fourth inning off of two sacrifice flies and a single. Stanford added one more run in the seventh inning with an RBI single by Maddy Coon. Cal State Fullerton scored one run in the bottom of the seventh, but it wasn't enough to come back against the Cardinal. Senior pitcher Laura Severson struck out four batters to improve to 9-0 on the season.
Junior outfielder Jackie Rinehart got on base in the first inning for the Cardinal with a single to shortstop. Freshman infielder Maddy Coon followed with a base hit to left field and freshman Missy Penna was walked to load the bases.The inning closed without a run for the Cardinal.
In the top of the fourth inning, Coon was walked and senior Shoney Hixson entered the game to pinch run at first base. Hixson stole second base and later took third on a wild pitch. Penna was also walked on base. Sophomore Michelle Smith then brought Hixson home with a sacrifice fly to right field and Stanford took a 1-0 lead. Penna took second base on a passed ball and sophomore infielder Erin Howe was walked. Sophomore infielder Tricia Aggabao knocked a single to right field, scoring Penna, then Howe and Aggabao advanced on a wild throw. Sophomore outfielder Anna Beardman hit another sacrifice fly to left field, bringing in Howe for the 3-0 Cardinal advantage.
Coon collected a double to left field in the top of the fifth inning, but the Cardinal hitters couldn't bring her home. Severson struck out two batters and senior shortstop Lauren Lappin
threw out a third in the bottom of the inning to bring the Cardinal up to bat.
Cal State Fullerton put two runners on base in the bottom of the sixth inning with a triple and a walk, but Severson struck out two batters to move into the seventh.
In the top of the seventh inning, senior outfielder Catalina Morris reached with a base hit past the second baseman. Rinehart followed with another single to right field, advancing Morris to second base. Lappin made it to first base on a fielder's choice, but Morris was out at third on the play. Coon then hit a single to center field, bringing Rinehart home from second base. The Cardinal led, 4-0, heading into the bottom of the seventh inning.
Molly Perez reached for the Titans in the seventh inning with a single up the middle. Courtney Martinez moved her to second with a sacrifice bunt, and Perez took third base on the next at-bat. Crystal Vieyra knocked a single to left field to score Perez. Stanford held the Titans off to claim the 4-1 win.
In seven innings, Severson struck out four batters, walked one and allowed five hits. Fullerton's Candice Baker struck out four batters, walked four and allowed three hits in just over three innings, while Marissa Marzan struck out two batters and allowed four hits in three innings.
Coon was 3-3 at the plate with one RBI and a walk, while Rinehart was 2-4 with one run.
Stanford will now face host Fresno State tomorrow at 1:00 pm. If the Cardinal wins, a second game will be played at 3:30 to determine the Region VI champion.
