Tuscaloosa, Ala. -
The 17th-ranked and second-seeded Stanford softball team got RBI singles from Catalina Morris (Sonoita, AZ) and Meghan Sickler (Houston, TX) in the bottom of the fifth inning to beat UT-Chattanooga 2-0 in the first day of NCAA Regionals in Tuscaloosa, Ala. The Cardinal, now 41-24, advance to face fifth-seeded Southern Illinois tomorrow at 2:30 p.m. (CT).
Stanford starter Dana Sorensen (San Diego, CA) shut down the Lady Mocs in the first inning, striking out the side. Chattanooga then put runners on first and second with no outs in the top of the second, but Sorensen retired the next three to end the threat.
Senior Kira Ching (San Lorenzo, CA) became Stanford's all-time career leader in triples with her hit in the second inning, marking her 10th triple of her career and fourth of the season.
The Cardinal finally broke out in the bottom of the fifth inning, recording two runs on four hits. Ching and Elizabeth Bendig (Santa Ana, CA) started the inning off with back-to-back singles. Chattanooga starter Awberey Winckler then got Maureen LeCocq (Woodhills, CA) to pop out and Heather Shook (Whittier, CA) to ground out. With two outs and runners on second and third, Morris delivered her clutch hit to center field to score Ching for the 1-0 lead. Sickler came in to pinch hit and kept the rally going with a single up the middle to score Bendig to put Stanford up 2-0.
Tori Nyberg (Belmont, CA) came in to relieve Sorensen in the sixth inning and finished the Cardinal's victory. Sorensen got the win and improved to 21-10 overall, becoming Stanford's all-time leader with 71 career wins. She went five innings, allowing two hits and fanned seven Lady Moc batters. Nyberg picked up her second save of the season, striking out two.
Ching had two of the Cardinal's six hits, going 2-for-3 with a triple.
