STANFORD, Calif.--The ninth-ranked Stanford softball team closed out the 1998 regular season with a 1-0, 3-0 sweep of Oregon on Sunday at the Stanford Softball Complex. Stanford improves to 39-16 on the season and 17-11 in the Pac-10. Oregon falls to 38-9 and 10-18 in the conference.

After five scoreless innings, Marcy Crouch scored what proved to be the winning run for Stanford. In the bottom of the sixth, Crouch walked and advanced to second on a single by right fielder Michele Acosta. First baseman Jenni Shidler's RBI single scored Crouch to put Stanford ahead, 1-0.

Junior Becky Blevins (23-8) picked up the win for Stanford in game one. She tossed her eighth shutout on the season, allowing only three hits while walking two and striking out six. Jennie Cook (20-17) recorded the loss for the Ducks.

Jennie Foyle walked in the bottom of the first inning to get things started for Stanford. She advanced to second on a walk by Crouch. Acosta's RBI single scored Foyle to put Stanford ahead, 1-0.

Foyle got things started for Stanford in the nightcap with a single to center field in the bottom of the third inning. Foyle advanced to second on a walk by shortstop Michelle Schneider. Foyle and Schneider advanced on a fly ball hit deep to center field by Crouch. Acosta singled to center field to scored Foyle and Schneider. The Cardinal defense held on to secure a 3-0 shutout.

Crouch (13-8) recorded the win for Stanford in game two. She tossed her fifth shutout on the season, allowing only three hits while striking out one. Senior Jessica Schulman allowed no hits while striking out one over two innings of relief.

Acosta led the offensive attack for the Cardinal, hitting 3-for-5 on the day. She drove in all three Cardinal runs in game two.

The pairings for the NCAA Tournament will be announced on Sunday, May 10 at 6 p.m. The regionals will be played on May 13-17 at selected sites.
