Softball Records First-Ever Sweep of Washington




April 25, 1998

STANFORD, Calif. -- The ninth-ranked Stanford softball team swept the third-ranked Washington Huskies, 2-1, 1-0 on Saturday at the Stanford Softball Complex. The sweep of the Huskies is the first in Stanford history. Stanford improves to 32-13 and 10-8 in the conference. The Huskies fall to 36-9 and 11-5 in the Pac-10.

Washington's Rosie Leutzinger started things off for Washington in the first inning of game one with a single. She stole second base and advanced to third on a fly ball to right field by Kim DePaul. Leutzinger scored Washington's lone run on a single to left field by Eve Gaw.

Stanford's Kellie Wiginton started off the bottom half of the inning for the Cardinal with a single to right field. Jennie Foyle's sacrifice bunt advanced Wiginton to second base. Shortstop Michelle Schneider doubled to left field to score Wiginton. In the bottom of the third, Wiginton doubled to left field and eventually scored on an RBI fielder's choice by Marcy Crouch. The run scored was Wiginton's second of the day and proved to be the winning run for the Cardinal. Wiginton hit 3-for-3 with two runs scored and a double in the first game.

Stanford's Marcy Crouch improved to 10-7 with the victory. She allowed one earned run on only four hits in the win. Jamie Graves (15-3) recorded the loss for Washington.

Stanford freshman first baseman Jenni Shideler hit her first collegiate home run over the left field fence in the bottom of the fifth inning. Shideler's run put Stanford up 1-0. Stanford's defense held on for the 1-0 victory. Becky Blevins (19-6) recorded her sixth shutout of the season. She allowed only four hits while walking none and striking out five. Jennifer Spediacci (15-5) picked up the win for Washington. She allowed four runs and one earned run while striking out five and walking one.

Stanford will host UCLA on Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Stanford Softball Complex.
