STANFORD, Calif.--The Stanford softball team split with Arizona State, 1-0, 0-1 in a pair of conference games today at the Stanford Softball Complex. The two squads are tied for 12th in the latest NFCA/USA Today rankings. Stanford's record stands at 29-10, including an 8-5 mark in conference play. Arizona State is 32-14 and 4-8 in the Pac-10.
Stanford second baseman Jennie Foyle singled in the top of the first inning. Foyle advance to second on a fielder's choice and moved to third on a single by rightfielder Michele Acosta. Foyle scored what proved to be the winning run on a wild pitch. Foyle led the offensive attack for the Cardinal, hitting 3-for-3 with one run scored in game one.
Stanford pitcher Marcy Crouch improved to 9-5 on the season after pitching the shutout. Crouch allowed seven hits while striking out two and walking none in the win. Arizona State's Roxanne Tsosie (19-5) picked up the loss. Tsosie allowed no earned runs on five hits while striking out five. Tsosie falls to 19-5 on the season.
Arizona State's Erin Hull singled in the top of the first inning of the nightcap to get things started for Arizona State. Hull advanced to second as left fielder Raja Woods grounded out to second base. Catcher Christine Gill's double to right field scored Hull and put the Sun Devils ahead 1-0. The Sun Devil's held on for the 1-0 victory.
ASU pitcher Carrie Breedlove (13-9) picked up the win after allowing only three hits and striking out nine over five innings of work. Tsosie recorded the save after pitching the final two innings. She allowed no hits while striking out three. Stanford junior Becky Blevins picked up the loss for Stanford. Blevins (17-5) allowed only two hits and one earned run while striking out six and walking one on the day.
Stanford will host defending NCAA Champion Arizona on Sunday, April 19 at 1 p.m. The Sun Devils will take on California at 1 p.m. in Berkeley on Sunday.
