STANFORD, Calif. - The 14th-ranked Stanford softball team extended its winning streak to nine games today with a convincing 6-0, 10-0 sweep of Harvard at the Cardinal Softball Complex. With the pair of victories, the Cardinal improved to 19-4 on the season while the Crimson fell to 7-10.
Stanford jumped on Harvard early in the first game, scoring all six runs in the first four innings. Junior second baseman Jennie Foyle (Orange, CA/Modena HS) got the ball rolling with a one-out single to center in the first inning, eventually coming around to score on a double by junior Marcy Crouch (Huntington Beach, CA/Marina HS). That would prove to be all of the offense the Cardinal would need as junior pitcher Becky Blevins (Scottsdale, AZ/Horizon HS) would come through with one of the best performances of her career. After walking the first batter of the game, Blevins settled in to retire 21 of the final 22 batters en route to the second no-hitter of her career - and the second in school history. Blevins, who improved to 11-1 on the season, walked two and struck out six. Offensively, four players recorded multiple-hit games in the Cardinal's 12-hit attack.. Crouch finished the game 2-for-4 (two doubles) with two rbi's.
The Cardinal picked up where it left off in game one, jumping on the Crimson with three runs in the first on freshman first baseman Jenni Shideler's (San Jose, CA/Leland HS) bases loaded double. The Cardinal added three more in the third and four in the fourth before the game was called in the fifth due to the 10-run mercy rule. Senior pitcher Jessica Schulman (Los Angeles, CA/Crossroads HS), in her first start of the season, tossed a complete-game, one-hit shutout. Schulman, whi improved to 3-0 on the season, walked just one for a near perfect game. Crouch added another three rbi in the victory, giving her five for the day.
