Stanford, Calif. -
In its second game of the Stanford Classic, the No. 7/9 Cardinal softball team scored nine runs on nine hits and earned its ninth run-rule decision of the year. Seven different players recorded hits and ten got on base, carrying the team to a 9-1 win in five innings over College of Charleston.
Sophomore Alissa Haber and senior Tricia Aggabao led the Cardinal offensively with two hits apiece, while senior Michelle Smith and sophomore Rosey Neill each had two RBI. Freshman pitcher Ashley Chinn secured her eighth win of the year, throwing a three-hitter and allowing just one earned run. Alexa Datko took the loss for the Cougars, and falls to 1-2.
In the bottom of the first inning, the Cardinal quickly jumped on the Cougar pitcher, recording two runs on three hits. Haber led off with her sixth double of the year, and Aggabao followed with a single through the right side. Maddy Coon walked to load the bases, and, with one out, Neill dropped a two-RBI single into left field to extend her hitting streak to a career-best nine games.
In the second inning, Stanford added to its total, using another trio of hits to bring three runs across. A walk and two short singles loaded the bases with no outs. A ground out by Coon scored one run, and Smith drove a ball into the right center field gap to score two more. With one swing, the senior, who is already among the all-time program leaders in six categories, climbed onto the Cardinal career hits chart, and moved into third place on the career RBI chart.
In the third inning, the scoring continued. A single by Shannon Koplitz
and an ensuing walk put two on for Anna Beardman
. The senior outfielder reached on an error, and Koplitz scored on the play. Haber drilled a sacrifice fly to left field that allowed Erin Howe
to score, and a single through the left side by Aggabao scored Beardman.
The team was eyeing a run-rule decision going into the fourth inning, but a solo homerun by Cougar designated player Shannon Howard in the top of the fourth trimmed the lead to 8-1.
The Cardinal answered in the bottom of the fourth, however, to keep its run-rule win on track. Freshman Erikka Moreno started a two-out rally with a single up the middle, advanced to second on an ensuing walk and scored on an error by the Cougar infield.
Chinn and the Stanford defense stayed strong in the top of the fifth, and closed out their ninth run-rule win of the year.
Stanford will play North Dakota State in its second game of today's doubleheader starting at approximately 5 p.m. The Cardinal continues the Stanford Classic with games against Campbell and Texas Tech tomorrow.
